Avocet wading in water

Tuesday, 2 October 2007

Summer (?) has fled by and once more we are into our new season of monthly coach outings. This year we again tried our luck on the east coast, with a visit to Lincolnshire, and we weren't disappointed. First port of call on arrival was Jackson's Marsh hide where an immature night heron was showing well, along with little egrets and an assortment of waders and wildfowl. The other scrapes and pools on the reserve produced 4 avocets, over 60 black-tailed godwits, plus ruff, snipe and dunlin.
Most of the group spent the afternoon on the beach, which was a hive of activity. At least 4 arctic skuas were harassing sandwich terns, while several red-throated divers were seen further out to sea. Small flocks of wigeon and common scoters passed by and gannets were plunge diving into the sea. Making our way back to the coach some of the group were able to obtain close views of knot and a single greenshank was seen on a pool next to the path back to the visitor centre. Over 50 species were seen on the day, a good start to the new season and a real appetizer for the next trip to Wells and Holkham.
